Jonathan Derbyshire was born in Stockport but was brought up in the south east of England. He was educated at the Universities of Sussex and Warwick and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He is a freelance literary journalist and part-time lecturer in philosophy. He is a regular writer for The Financial Times, New Humanist, Prospect, Time Out and The Philosopher's Magazine.
